I used to think that trapping supplies were a part of America’s past, that trapping lines went out of fashion with beaver-fur top hats. After all, with all of our modern fibers and our modern lifestyle, where is the need for trapping? Well, any animal control officer can tell you that they still have a need for trapping supplies, and I have a few friends who run trap lines and thus have a need for trapping supplies as well. Even my dad has seen the need for trapping supplies in suburbia. I guess that even in a modern world, we still have a need for trapping supplies. I grew up in a small Colorado town.
It was not an uncommon sight to see a bear roaming around the streets. My parents had one in their backyard going through their garbage. We watched him from their balcony, and luckily it made its way out of the yard without causing too much of a problem. Sometimes, however, animals can pose a danger to themselves and to others. My parents home is not on the outskirts of town, but they have some wooded area behind their house. Raccoons like this area, and they like coming into my parent’s neighborhood to forage. They can make a real mess. My dad bought a box trap as a way to trap and relocate raccoons so that they didn’t damage his garage or get into something that would hurt them. He was grateful for how easy it was to get trapping supplies to help him deal with his raccoon problem.
My dad was able to deal with raccoons on his own, but some people can’t or don’t feel comfortable dealing with animals on their own. Most cities have an animal control department to deal with animal problems. Even something like a stray cat can pose a threat to humans. I doubt a cat could kill a human, but they can sure inflict a lot of damage and may pose a risk for infection. It is best to leave it up to the professionals to deal with stray animals or wild animals that have wandered into a populated area. Animal control specialists will have the trapping supplies and the know-how to take care of animals in a humane way. There are still people I know of to this day who run their own trapping lines.
There are many reasons for doing this, but one reason is for fun. I know I always get a thrill when I see and animal in the wild. There is something so elemental about it. It is a contact to a natural world that you simply can’t find in an inner city. These friends I have trap to get in touch with the natural side of life, but they also trap for money. Believe it or not, there is still a market for some furs out there. Sometimes you have to export furs in order to find a market, but where there is a will there is a way to make a profit off of trapping.
For all those who have trapping needs, it is really not that hard to find trapping supplies. For example, if you log on to the Internet and search for trapping supplies, you will find dozens of sites offering trapping supplies and tips. You should be able to find anything you could possibly need on any one of these sites. Thus, if you are a hobbyist trapper, or if you are an animal control specialist, or if you simply have a nasty raccoon problem, it should be no problem to get your hands on the trapping supplies you need, even in this modern world.
