Getting Hand Pruners Right

It is important to use the right tools when performing jobs around the garden. This is particularly true with the task of pruning. If you use the wrong type of hand pruners while cutting stems and branches from your plants you could damage the plants or introduce disease into the garden. Pruning is a necessary task for the gardener and it is important that the pruning tools you use are the right ones.

The two chief pruning tools that will be required in most circumstances are hand pruners and pruning saws. There are a variety of other specialist pruning tools that can be bought for unusual situations but for the vast majority of the time these two tools will be sufficient.

By far the pruning tool that is going to be used out of the two mentioned is going to be your hand pruners. Apart from the larger pruning tasks that will be required each year there will be an untold number of small tasks that will require a stem or a flower to be removed.

The type of hand pruners you buy will come down to a matter of personal taste but will also require some decision making on your part. Buying the highest quality possible is important. The blades of the hand pruners should be made of high-tempered steel and the grips should feel comfortable in your hand. If possible you should be able to decide on the size of the pruner you buy too.

You will need two different types of hand pruners to perform all of the pruning tasks properly. Bypass hand pruners are for cutting soft, living stems while anvil pruners are for chopping tough, dead stems. It is not advised using the hand pruners for the other job because you risk damaging your bypass pruners on the woody foliage and you risk damaging your plants if you use anvil pruners on living stems.

When you have bought the right hand pruners it is then important that you treat them right and you use them in the right circumstances. Taking care with your hand pruners will help your garden to flourish.
