House Surge Protectors Stop Surges Before They Harm Your Home
Unfortunately it is a common belief that plugging your electronic equipment into a power strip will provide sufficient protection against electrical surging. This is not really accurate as power strips are not surge protectors. Individual surge protectors can come in the shape of power strips but if you want adequate protection from power surges in your home then you should protect your whole house at the point of entry first. Individual devices may protect electronic equipment, but house surge protectors do a much better job at protecting all of your household equipment from major surges.
A house surge protector is made to channel excess power down into the ground, by way of a ground wire. When electricity flows through it any excess power is channeled through the ground wire until the level returns to normal. Some are made with a warning system, such as an alarm or a light system, that will let you know whenever a surge has coursed through your electrical system. The better type of protectors will safely cope with surges of up to 40,000 amps. Surges happen for many different reasons, most out of the control of the home owner. For example lighting can cause surges, as can a sudden disruption such as a car running into a power line. Sometimes having too many electrical appliances running at one time can also have this effect. If your surge protector is wired directly into a house’s service panel it will effectively protect the house from around 85% of voltage. The extra 15% can usually adequately be taken care of by smaller plug in power strips.
There is quite a selection of surge suppressors available for purchase. If you are going to all the expense of investing in one, you should make sure that the one you get is going to be effective. After all, it is usually much cheaper to buy a decent one than to replace all the appliances that may be damaged should a surge occur. The Intermatic whole house surge protector will protect your home from surges of up to 48,000 amps. It is fairly inexpensive, only around $150, and it is easy for anyone to install. Leviton whole house surge protectors will protect you from surges of up to 50,000 amps. One of its selling points is that it provides instant response time whenever a surge occurs. It is slightly more expensive, costing up to $200 but this surge protector is worth it for the added protection that it offers.
