One of the best ways to add beauty and functionality to the outdoor areas of your home is by installing low voltage outdoor path lights. Installing low voltage lighting allows you to light functional areas, like decks, patios, and driveways, while at the same time highlighting areas of your landscape that you want to show off, like large trees, statues, or just simply a flowerbed. If you’ve already decided where you want to put the lights and have gone out to buy them, here are the steps that you need to follow to install your lights correctly.
The first thing that you need to do is find an appropriate spot to install the landscape light transformer. This is quite possibly the most important step that you will take. The transformer can’t be too far from your light fixtures, otherwise the voltage drop in the cable that you run might cause your lights not to work properly. Try to find an outdoor outlet that is close and use mount the transformer near this.
Make sure to stick it either on the side of the house or on a stake placed in the ground. This will keep it out of standing water, which runs the risk of causing a shock hazard, or just simply breaking the transformer.
After you have the transformer mounted, the next step is for you to run the cable to the light fixtures. While you’re doing this, make sure that you run the cable through areas that people don’t normally walk so it doesn’t create a trip hazard. If you have to do this, you can also bury the cable just underground later.
Once you’ve run the cable to the lights, the next step is to hook the lights into the cable. Each light fixture is slightly different in doing this, so make sure that you look at your owner’s manual. Once the lights are connected, connect the cable to the transformer and switch it on. Your lights should work!
