Diamonds, as beautiful as they are, come in many shapes sizes and styles. Picking the right diamond should never be a hassle. When choosing, it is important that your jeweler is GIA certified. What does this mean? Simply, that they have a good knowledge and understanding of the diamonds that they are dealing with. Whether you’re getting married, plan to get engaged or just want a great gift for that special someone, the style and type of diamond may vary.
So where do you start? First, It is good to know how diamonds are valued. Diamonds are weighed in something called carats. One carat is equivalent to .2 grams or the average paperclip. This does not mean that the more carats a diamond has makes it better, but it is one of the primary benefactors in value. This is because a larger diamond will obviously be valued more than a smaller one.
The other contributors to a diamonds beauty and value are clarity, cut and color. The clarity of a diamond is judged by the deep and unique inclusions of the rock itself that give it that look of grandeur. This is based upon the raw diamond itself, as they are found deep within the earth which causes their unique differences. Diamonds without blemishes and with a cleaner look are more rare, thus causing a higher value due to the clarity.
The highest grade of clarity in the diamond business is known as ‘flawless’. Contrary to what you might think, the lack of color in a diamond is considered better. This is because colorless diamonds are far more rare than tinted or colored diamonds. Even a subtle color difference between two diamonds, not visible by the untrained eye can make all the difference in the price of a diamond. Lastly, the cut of the diamond is the true key to the beauty of a diamond, regardless of size. The cut is what creates the flash and sparkle and deep look of a diamond that makes it such a precious rock. Hopefully now that you know the basics of diamonds, you can now have a better idea of what you should look for when purchasing a diamond.
