Lower Blood Sugar Through Exercise and Diet

Football season is a time to remind those of us who participated in the sport in our younger days of the thrill of competition and the joy in making good plays and the camaraderie among teammates. Waxing nostalgic is a favorite thing for some people, yet these days the only exercise that they get is remembering the past and moving the arm on the recliner to elevate their feet. The other thing that is elevated through sedentary living and no exercise is their blood sugar levels and soon good health will also only be a nostalgic memory unless some of those football memories rekindle the desire and discipline to make changes and get moving again.

The discipline necessary to be successful on the football field is the same discipline necessary to stick with an exercise plan and reverse the effects of many years of poor eating habits and no exercise. Disciplined eating habits that revolve around low carbohydrate eating and more fiber and protein in the diet take a commitment to keep up with every day. Lowering blood sugar levels is partly diet changes and partly more exercise. More exercise burns calories and glucose is the fuel to keep muscles going. Increasing the need for glucose in the muscles reduces the amount circulating in the blood and makes it easier for insulin to better regulate blood sugar levels.

The diet change is important to because changing the mix of food that is eaten each day will also decrease the amount of glucose that gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Fiber and protein are not converted to glucose when digested; only carbohydrates are and decreasing the amount of carbs eaten each day also decreases the amount of glucose in the blood. With less glucose to use as fuel, that stored fat will finally serve its purpose and get used up as fuel in place of that glucose. These changes will bring about better blood sugar control and the added benefit of weight loss, two things necessary to good health. If possible compare your test results to a blood sugar levels chart and see just how much of a difference good eating exercise make.
