You know that business casual is what you are supposed to be wearing to work. You see what everyone else wears. Some seem a little too business and others are definitely too casual. What exactly is business casual, and how do you know if you are you doing it right? The basics are fairly simple, but the execution means that more details are required.
Formal clothes, like suits and ties, are okay in business casual, but are not required or even necessarily appropriate, as they may make others feel uncomfortable. Save your suit and tie and sweater vest, because there will be a place for them. Use them for travel, big meetings and presentations, and a visit to your local office branch from a big wig in the company.
If a company wants a business causal dress code, it is because they want people to feel relaxed at work. At the same time, they want them remembering that they are at work. You need to be neat and clean, not wrinkled and disheveled.
If you are using the same pieces over and over again in your business casual dress and feel that parts of your wardrobe are being neglected, there is something you can do without crossing the line into inappropriate dress. You pair a very casual item with a formal item. Casual pants with a dress top is a great way to do this. Or, you could choose a dressy skirt with a plain tee shirt. The two piece will meet in a casual dress medium.
Also, you want to veer away from being too trendy with business casual. If you would wear an outfit to to the clubs dancing, it is not appropriate for work. Be wary of how tight items are, and whether they are translucent. Overly revealing piece can sometimes border on sexual harassment if they make others uncomfortable.
