You can drive down any country road anywhere in the world and see several different types of pasture fencing. Some are obviously well taken care of, while others are a bit run down and in need of repair. There is always a variety of fencing that looks safe and others that don’t look safe for any animal let alone a horse. Branches from storms and downed boards are hazardous to animals. Wild animals will also take down portions of fencing as they move about the area. Some of the fences are covered in horse signs, while others are just cluttered with roadside debris. Some horse owners will rent out portions of their fence for people to put up signs advertising their businesses like for a farrier Bellingham or for the fencing company that put up the fence to begin with. All of these things can make fencing unsafe for animals of any kind if done improperly or if they are not repaired as needed.
There are many reasons to constantly check your pasture fence lines. It’s very important to keep up with any and all repairs needed to safely contain your livestock. It’s also important to make sure the repairs are done properly so that it is safe, stays fixed, and looks nicely done. There are certain types of fencing that will work with one animal but not another. For example, barbed wire is excellent at containing cattle with no injuries, but it’s not a safe type of fencing for horses or goats. Likewise, putting up 5 rail wood fencing is great for containing horses safely, but cattle and goats will go right through those types of fencing. Obviously the type of fence you use depends on what you will contain. The object of safe fencing is to provide fencing that will not injure the animal and yet will not allow the animal to escape which then creates a liability for the animal owner. With any type of fencing there will always be repairs that need to be done. Just make sure the fencing is safe for your animals.
