The portable gas grill means summer is here! While some people use their grills year round, more common is seasonal use of the appliance. As a cooking appliance, it needs regular maintenance to perform at its best.
Remember that your cooking grids are in contact with food. As such keep them clean to prevent contamination of food as well as increasing the life of your grill. Keep this protected from the weather and maintain regularly during the season. Minimize oxidation by applying a light coat of vegetable oil and keep it dry when not in use. You wouldn’t eat off a dirty plate – don’t cook your food on dirty grills! Food contamination is an important issue and is within your control.
Pay attention to splatters, drippings and other “leftovers” on the hoses and outside of the grill. Wipe down regularly with cleaner to insure there is no contamination here. Greasy hoses encourage squirrels and other animals to lick and chew on the “food” smelling surface. This damages the hoses and creates unnecessary wear and tear on your grill.
Don’t be tempted to use oven cleaner as a short cut; the chemicals can damage the paint and other surfaces. Regular cleaning of the grill can’t be said enough. It is the #1 maintenance thing you can do for your portable gas grill to maintain a long, productive life.
Pay attention to the color of flame on your grill. A yellow flame with low temperature can be indication of a faulty regulator. This means not enough gas is getting through.
Also pay attention to the igniters and burners. Having these in good working condition makes a big difference. A clogged spot or rust can shorten the life of your portable gas grill. Keep it maintained and under cover when not in use!
