Metal roofing can be seen on many different kinds of buildings. The most common are large commercial, agricultural and also industrial buildings. Some private residential homes also have metal roofs fitted, but these are not often comprised of sheets, tile like designs are used instead. Large corrugated roofing sheets are what we usually see in place in the larger commercial and industrial buildings. These sheets have many benefits making them attractive options for warehouse and factory owners. The corrugation process makes the sheets very strong. The bending strength in the direction of the corrugations is increased considerably. This allows even the largest sheets to have great strength. The strength to weight ratio is also impressive. These sheets are relatively light, but still able to resist considerable forces and impacts, remaining sturdy.
The metal used to produce corrugated roofing sheets is usually either steel or aluminium. Both of these materials have their individual benefits which are advantageous in different situations. The sheet metal roofing that is produced from steel is by far the strongest kind. It is highly dent resistant and so very effective in areas that may experience frequent storms. The aluminium sheets are not as strong but are very lightweight. They are also naturally resistant to corrosion. Aluminium reacts with oxygen in the air to form aluminium oxide, this provides an effective seal over the metal. These strengths make aluminium sheets very useful in coastal areas where the salt and moisture content in the air is higher. Steel sheets can be treated to resist corrosion. The process used is known as galvanizing and often involves dipping the steel in zinc. Although this will reduce the effects of corrosion on steel sheets, it does not create an impenetrable barrier that will last forever. Aluminium is the far superior material if resistance to corrosion is important, steel is the best choice where strength and impact resistance are key.
