Selecting a telephone service and device is not as easy as it once was. Before 1984, AT&T was the only provider of either local or long distance service. if you wanted a phone and wanted to make long distance calls then you were an AT&T customer. Furthermore, they owned the equipment and therefore, were able to dictate what features the home and business owner could use.

Things changed for the consumer when AT&T was forced to break up. This allowed smaller telephone providers to enter into the telephone technology business. As a result, many of these new companies begin to offer technology, which at the time, seemed revolutionary but was rather cumbersome by the rapidly evolved expectations of consumers in the early 21st century. One of these early phones was the USB Internet phone.

It is laughable to think that the first generation of USB telephones were a collection of wires and a headset which resembling something out of a silent era science fiction movie of what the future might have looked like. However, many of the early shortcomings of early USB phones have since been improved upon. Now, the average USB telephone looks and feels like any other telephone including its more commonly known and widely used cousin, the mobile telephone.

Yet, before one goes out to buy one a USB Internet telephone, they should be aware that this is a fading technology which might not be around for much longer thus complicating things when that consumer needs to have their telephone serviced or if there some other need which cannot be met with this older technology.

Still, the newer generation of USB phones are practical in that they do allow a consumer the option of having a telephone service which is cheaper than the traditional land line provided by the once monopoly of Ma Bell. In addition, these newer models do provide the similar features to those of the cellular phone but not the iPhone.
